Session on: Diabetes, Pre-diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome

Pre-diabetes represents an elevation of plasma glucose above the normal range but below that of clinical diabetes that is linked to a great risk of stroke and heart disease. Pre-diabetes commonly associates with the metabolic syndrome (clustering of the medical conditions: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, abdominal obesity, high serum triglycerides and HDL). WHO report says that about 15 to 30 % of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years. Insights into how diabetes and pre-diabetes related to metabolic syndrome could help to develop the next wave of therapies to treat diabetes.
